New research indicates that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People purchasing such medications should be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle changes.
